Here is a story from the lighter side... Several days ago my wife informed me she thought she saw a black widow in our house. Since I have never seen a black widow in our house I was a bit skeptical. Just a few days later she informs me there is one of those black widow spiders on the bathroom window. Following her into the bathroom she grabs her weapon of choice...the fly swatter. Seeing the spider I realized it was just a little "jumping spider."
Now the stage is set! I know there is little danger even if you were to handle the spider... Tiff still thinks her life is hanging in the balance. Tiff takes aim at the spider and does one of those small back and forth swings like a baseball batter would do just before smashing a home run. About 10 small swings into her warm up I decide to scream the most blood curtailing scream my manhood can conjure up. This action was (in Tiff's mind) the same as giving someone a good shove while they stand on the edge of a cliff. Tiff's reaction was along her usual responses. That is the usual response of someone with a hyperactive scare reflex. First it started out with a giant swing for the fences that landed about a foot off target. This was closely followed by her running in place and swinging the swatter up and down in a fashion that resembled a waving motion. This waving action lasted about 8-10 seconds. Then came the shrieking. It was loud and it did not stop. Tiff realized the shrieking and fanning of the swatter was not getting the job done. So like any reasonable human she decided to let go of the swatter. She forgot to tell her arm to quit flailing which resulted in the swatter flying across the bathroom. Now not only is the killer black widow mad and trying to get her but there is an unknown flying object out to get her as well
. Her reaction to this overload of danger was a 180 degree hop and in true Sonic the Hedgehog style her feet were moving faster than her body could move. Finally she gained traction and fled the scene. If there is one thing to learn from this it is simply swat the spider or don't. No need to warm up for ten minutes!
